The Wound Care Certification (WCC) program at Beeg Medical Education and Training Center is designed to equip licensed nurses with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed to excel in wound care across various clinical environments. This comprehensive course covers the foundational principles and advanced practices within wound care, enhancing each participant’s understanding of their role in this specialty. Through interactive sessions and practical skill-building exercises, participants gain real-world experience to confidently apply wound care techniques and protocols. Completing this certification boosts nurses’ expertise, skill level, and confidence, contributing to improved patient care and outcomes.
Course Objectives
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of the skin, including its functions and structure.
- Explore the phases of wound healing to recognize normal and abnormal healing processes.
- Learn the basic fundamentals of wound care, including hygiene and safety protocols.
- Classify different types of wounds, focusing on identification and management techniques.
- Examine various wound care dressings, their properties, and appropriate applications.
- Discover the types, properties, and applications of wound debridement methods.
- Define the scope of practice for wound care nurses, covering roles in assessment, documentation, infection control, consultation, and monitoring.
Participate in a skills lab covering practical techniques such as:
- Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) dressing application
- Wound culture techniques for infection assessment
- Compression therapy methods
- Aseptic dressing change procedures
- Circulation assessment utilizing Doppler technology
- Wound measurement techniques for accurate evaluation
Scope of Practice
- Licensed Nurses: The program is designed for Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) who wish to specialize in wound care.
- Role of the Wound Care Nurse: A wound care nurse is responsible for delivering care that requires substantial specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills. This expertise is grounded in clinical research and the application of wound management principles developed through the completion of a specialized training program.
- Clinical Supervision and Delegation: Activities performed by wound care nurses necessitate clinical supervision and may involve delegation from a licensed medical provider.
- Practice Guidelines: Certified wound care nurses must perform their duties in alignment with the orders prescribed by medical providers, prioritizing patient safety. They are expected to operate within the legal scope of practice, adhering to federal, state, and local laws, as well as the policies, procedures, and guidelines established by their employing healthcare institution or practice setting.
Course Format
This is an eight (8) hour program available in both online and in-person formats. Online participants can complete hands-on skills competency under the guidance of a qualified preceptor.
OPTION #1: One-Day Onsite/Classroom WorkshopThis format includes lectures, interactive demonstrations, and hands-on skills training, allowing participants to engage directly with instructors and practice techniques in a supportive environment.
OPTION #2: One-Day Virtual Workshop / Live SessionThis option features lectures and interactive learning, complemented by visual skills demonstrations from the instructor. Participants can engage in real-time discussions and Q&A sessions, making it a dynamic learning experience.
